Founders / Curators Notes:
Since 2011; we have been busy curating what we love doing the most; presenting the makers community in a clean and crisp marketplace format for the people of Madras / Chennai.
Across 22 editions, By Hand from the Heart has showcased over 300 makers / design stories just for Madras.
As curators, we felt it was time to check a few boxes on our list – first a Trademark for our brand name By Hand from the Heart; and second, to create our brand identity.
The logo, was clearly more that a brand identity for us; we wanted it to symbolise the essence of our city; after all, By Hand from the Heart is a Made in Madras story. Also the logo had to represent the makers who diligently visit our city to showcase their original works for our discerning shoppers.
The moment of truth – we debut our logo with our 23rd edition this February 2018. We are truly grateful to Riddhi Desai of Tinyfarm, our brand identity designer; for giving our ideas a form, with her quintessential clean & contemporary design sensibilities. A By Hand participant, Riddhi has traveled with us over the years as a maker and patron.
Designer’s Note – Riddhi Desai of Tinyfarm:
By Hand From The Heart is a concept that was Made in Madras. The curators scout and invite makers from all across India; to showcase their works in the city of Madras. Each edition at BHFTH is carefully curated with a strong focus on hand-crafted and handmade.
The curators and founders of ‘By Hand from the Heart’ wanted to strongly establish the location factor in their brand identity.
Structure & The Symbol: Taking inspiration from Madras Checks, the brand identity was designed to highlight the city’s cultural history in its textiles and craft. The distinctive tilted symbol represents the singular platform of BHFTH; the multiple inner squares represents the collective of makers. A visual identity representing our tagline – One Show, Many Stories.
In BHFTH symbol one can notice diagonal ‘H’ & ‘H’ crossing their paths for Hand & Heart. These are the two keywords in the brand name; they highlight the skill and passion of the makers community and the essence of the maker movement. The angled tilt of both H shows an equal importance, hence bringing in the balance.
Colours: With warm colour palette, inspired by the kaavi red – this warm colour is most commonly associated with our city’s culture and facade – freshly drawn kaavi kolams to the AACHIKAAL brick walls, madras terrace roofs and the inviting red oxide flooring – the colour echoes the Madras heritage in a contemporary and timeless way.
