Tell us a bit about yourself and your Brand

Hey, I am Shreelekha Lakshmipathy, currently Founder, Intern, sometimes even Office Assistant (when Dhanam chooses to not show up for the day) at BeatRoot. An Architect and Product designer from School of Architecture and Planning, Chennai and Industrial design centre, IIT Bombay. Fascinated with Process of a Product in general, be it hand made or machine.
As Beatroot, we believe products are tools of self-expression. Weaving amidst constant competition and easy judgement, we are of the opinion that choice is not a mere option but a definition in itself. It defines who we are. Building on this, we attempt to instil a personality in our creation of the day-to-day products and construct a story for all things we take for granted otherwise.

What is your personal favourite pick from BeatRoot right now? And why?
The Infinite Book, its a leather sleeve that converts A4 papers to a notebook. Its the one thing I use everyday. Also because it was one of our firsts.
Also, currently, it would be the Spin-top from our ‘Brass’ series. The precision with which its made, offers a long spin time. Its beautiful and addictive. I end up using it atleast thrice every hour !

What are your displaying at the By Hand, From The Heart.
We would be debuting two series – Desk and Brass and we are looking forward to see the response for them. Notes, our previous series will be available for purchase too.

Any product story you would like to share.
White Book from The Creation Project. It is basically a notebook exchange programme – Purchase a blank book with details of the project. Fill it with musings, everything from comics to portraits to text to collage. Once the pages are complete, ship the treasure to the mentioned address. You will receive a notebook from a stranger in exchange for you submission. It is a medium to deliberately rest upon the window sill of the life of a complete stranger who might share something in common with you. In this time and age, where anonymity is a profile-click away, we intended to provide a platform for creative story-telling on a personal level.
This was originally conceived as a marketing event for the Brand’s then series of Notebooks but this idea was dropped to provide room for a larger cause. We took the ‘Brand’ out of the equation and became sole facilitators for this NonProfit programme. The first exchange was in June and we were overwhelmed to see the response. People shared stories of their day, cribbed about an event, gave away their recipes etc. It is amazing how enriching anonymity and non judgement can be.
Usually, I am never fully satisfied with my work. But that day, I gave a pat on my shoulders, not for coming up with the idea but for knowing when to be a founder and when to be an audience.
