Today on the blog, meet Reka Ashok of Tamarai. She shares her label story. Do visit her at our makers market this August.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Reka Ashok. Although being a Physics graduate, I’ve always had an inclination towards colour and design. My life has taken me on an interesting journey, from securing the title of Miss Trichy – 1992, to being a Banker, and it’s the thrill of it that I love. I’ve always believed that no dream is ever too big! Its just a matter of time, until you see it through.
Were you always interested in design?
A design can be defined as a decorative pattern, or a plan or drawing to show the look and functioning of an object, be it a garment or a machine. My science background, helped me realise that everything around us, is a product of design. This piqued my interest, in the field of design.
About your design label
Tamarai is a brand that is made out of pure love and passion for the traditional handlooms of India. With every collection, we try to revive a lost craft practice. We aim to not only increase recognition of the fabrics and materials that we use, but also spread awareness of it’s origins and uniqueness. This way we all learn how to appreciate, one of India’s most valued traditions – the art of Handlooms.
How has the label evolved over the years?
We began Tamarai in the month of June, 2017. I’m proud to say that we are a year old now! As a startup, every single day, every single minute is an opportunity for us to grow and learn from our mistakes. Over the past year, the team has grown as a family, making us stronger. None of this would be possible, without the constant love and support from our customers and followers.
How would you describe your label’s aesthetics?
The brand’s aesthetics reflects our belief in tradition and culture. We’ve always believed in simplicity.
What do you hope people think when they think of Tamarai?
Here at Tamarai, we put our customer’s happiness before anything else. We want them to be able to relate to every collection that we make, almost like a reflection of your personality. Something that anybody and everybody can pull off, and feel special in.
What is your personal favorite pick from your label right now? And why?
My favourite pick from our collection, would be our newest edition ‘KHUN’. Quite honestly it’s the vibrancy of the colours that seem to sweep me off my feet! It’s a pure handwoven, cotton fabric that is extremely breathable and light, and it drapes like a dream!
What are your displaying at the By Hand, From The Heart.
We will be showcasing a range of 5 different handloom collections, originating from different parts of India. It would involve a mix of sarees and contemporary styled products!
