Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi, I am Divvya, my inclination towards drawing and creating things as a kid led me to take up architecture After gaining some experience working with some talented designers and architects, I branched out to start my own practice. I run an architectural and interior design studio in Chennai named D POD. The Corner window is an off shoot which caters to home décor and furniture design. I love upcycling things and scavenging through flea markets to find unique materials and useful knick knacks.

Why is making so important to you?

I love the process through which a concept turns into a product one step at a time. I just love the freedom that “making” offers, once you start making your own furniture. You aren’t limited by what is available in stores.

How did “The Corner Window” begin and how has it evolved over the years?

It started off when we weren’t able to find furniture to compliment some of the spaces we were designing. This led to making individual pieces of furniture for clients. We are fairly new and thus are just beginning to evolve.

What is your personal favorite pick from The Corner Window right now? And why?

The Kilpauk Charm, which is a side table, is a special piece that started off as a companion to a 100 year old chair for a very special client.

What are you displaying at the By Hand, From The Heart.

We are bringing pieces inspired by mid -century modern style. This includes side tables, end tables and storage units.

What is a typical working day, like.

On the days that I work on furniture design, I start out with a discussion with my carpenters. Once they start building the pieces, we tweak the details as we proceed which involves a lot of sketching, making samples and mockups.

What is your favourite work tool?

My favourite work tool is a pencil, it puts my thoughts on paper and I don’t have to rely on battery/electricity.

Any design story you would like to share.

I’ve come to notice that the best ideas strike at the most unlikely times. Sometimes it is just as simple as finding the right material for a lampshade or the right knob. It always intrigues me when things fall in place naturally.
