Sister and brother, Rashmi and Rupak Munje will present “Togetherness” at the Makers Market this September. Let’s find out more about the siblings, their inspirations and their collective titled – ‘Togetherness” in this feature. Rashmi speaks…
Tell us a bit about yourself.
Rashmi: I remember painting at a very early age and went on doing so till my class 12. After my 12th I got drifted away from this; my love for art surfaced naturally when I decided to choose art as my career. This was nurtured at MOP Vaishnav and MICA but the biggest influence was my brother Rupak who inspired me to paint again!
How would you describe your individualistic styles?
Rashmi: Rupak has a very unique ‘First Paint and then think style’, which brings his non- verbal autistic mysteries on canvas. I use ‘First think and Paint style’, which is surrealistic whether it is a pair of legs that look like birds , a woman’s hair forming clouds in the sky and Buddha made with the leaves of the bodhi tree under which he got an enlightenment.
Your inspirations.
Rashmi: In a world where everything is digital even in art; Rupak inspired me to pick the paintbrush again. Rupak was inspired to paint from his art therapist Melissa Enderle. Dad is our biggest inspiration in art; he has preserved all my childhood paintings which I recreated on a bigger canvas and got an opportunity to relive my childhood.
Tell us about your recent works and your proposed showcase at the By Hand, From The Heart.
Rashmi: Our recent work showcases ‘Togetherness’ of my brother Rupak and Me and our mystic memories on canvas.
Your favorite art pick from your works & Rupak’s. And why?
Rashmi: Even though Rupak and I live in different imaginary world our togetherness is magical, which was brought to life on canvas when we created ‘Kili Josiyam’ using a face massager.
Can you describe your work place / space?
Rashmi: Our work space is made of mysteries, imagination, childhood memories, face massager, leaves, spoons, rolling pin, ladles, magazines, broom stick and everything which is unusual. All this is brought to life on canvas on an easel called our dining table.
What is a typical day like with art, work and family.
Rashmi: Our typical day starts by ringing of a door bell, sip of tea, sounds of a pressure cooker, tearing of magazine pages, aroma of lovely food runs towards a hungry canvas
What’s the best thing about being an artist?
Rashmi: The best thing about being an artist is the blissful feeling of expressing your thoughts and emotions on canvas the way you see it in your mind.
What would you say to someone thinking about selling their work?
Rashmi: Selling and building your name needs the same passion and energy that is required to create the artworks. Only then selling becomes a smooth journey.
