Tell us a bit about yourself:

My name is Shruti Dharwadkar, I am the founder of Moriko Organic. I was a little girl when I was introduced to upcycling and conserving natural resources. So, after my post graduation in Fashion from Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan, Italy, it was quite natural that I wanted to work in the field of sustainability.  Although, it was tough to find a satisfactory position in this field, I decided it was now or never and took the leap to start a brand of my own.

About your venture.  What inspired you to start your business?

I have always been big on sustainability and wanted to do my bit to save the environment. After coming back to the country, I realized that, there were few opportunities in the slow fashion industry. Having my own brand was somewhat of a pre-retirement plan, but, I decided that if I wanted to make a difference I needed to start early. I did my research and found that India was one of the largest producers of organic textile, but the products were being exported than being sold here in India.

I decided to use handicrafts inspired by stories in a contemporary fashion that would appeal to the end consumer, the children! This is how Moriko Organic (which means ‘Child of the Forest’ in Japanese and also sounds like MORE ECO) was born.

What are you displaying at the By Hand, From The Heart.

We will be displaying a range of GOTS certified handblock printed and herbal dyed garments as well as our new collection of natural dyed, handwoven khadi garments for kids. We will also have a capsule collection of khadi garments for mommies who would like to twin with their kiddos.
