Anju Nair of Wood & Yarn, Chennai designs hand block printed textiles. Let’s find out more about her design venture and we look forward to seeing her stylish and affordable range of sarees at our upcoming makers market event here in Chennai.
Tell us a bit about yourself?
I am a textile designer, having done my masters in Fine Arts from Stella Maris College, Chennai. I have been guided by my mother Kala Thamby, an established textile designer herself in Chennai, with thirty years of experience in hand, so its only natural for me to get drawn towards colors, patterns and more from my childhood days. Besides, my years in Kolkata, which is a treasure–house for designers like me, where I had the fantastic opportunity to work with skilled artisans/craftsmen. This working experience has helped me evolve as a designer.
How has your label evolved?
It has been a constant innovation in weaves, colour schemes, handblock prints, design concepts and more.. This has sustained W&Y over the years as we believe in offering something new yet retaining the design aesthetics people identify with.
Define your design aesthetics?
Wood & Yarn designs are masterfully handcrafted where a constantly evolving colour palette meets with our signature style contemporary hand block prints on experimental weaves.
What are you displaying at By Hand From The Heart?
We at W&Y are excited as we will be introducing our new range of innovative weaves , after more than a year of research through trial and error. Saris and unstitched material sets worked in a contemporary style using abstract prints and a spirited/vicacious colour palette to choose from.
